LIVE UPDATES FROM THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2018: DAY 1- OPENING CEREMONY & MATCH BETWEEN RUSSIA VS SAUDI ARABIA

The 21st FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in Russia's Luzhniki Stadium by in a couple of hours.
The tournament, often seen as the only sporting event that could challenge Olympics in terms of popularity, will be held across 12 venues in 11 cities in Russia, while there will be three (3) matches every day until the end of the group stage, Day 1 of the tournament sees only a single  game. It will be played between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia but before that comes the opening ceremony .

The opening ceremony will feature Will Smith and Nicky Jam, who feature in this season's World Cup anthem. It will also include British pop star Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garifullina. Brazilian great Ronaldo, who won the World Cup in 1994 and 2002 will also be there.

Updates will be available at the beginning of the opening ceremony through to the end of the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

    Viral reports say Nigerian singer, Wizkid, will be among the artistes who will perform at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup today.

    He will reportedly be performing alongside with Nicky Jam feat. Will Smith & Era Istrefi, who will be performing the official world cup theme.

    The World Cup will kick off with a Russia and Saudi Arabia match on the 14th of June.

    At this year’s ceremony, the artistes will perform 30 minutes before the start of the game.

    If true, then this is a big one for Wizkid as the whole world would be watching him.

  2. Russia are not in good form heading into the tournament. They are winless in their last seven matches, including a defeat to Austria and a draw against Turkey in their warm-up matches.

    It will take a special effort from Cherchesov's men to rise to the occasion.
    The pressure is on the hosts to get off to a good start to the tournament. No host nation has lost their opening game in the history of the tournament. As a result, the eyes of Russia will be on Stanislav Cherchesov and his team to pull off a fine performance to defeat Saudi Arabia this afternoon.
