NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION (NUC) SELECTS BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY FOR BLUEPRINT ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has nominated Benue State University as its lead institution for the drafting of a Blue print for Nigeria’s prosperity in 2050.
The Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abubakar Rasheed disclosed the choice of Benue State University for the project in a letter addressed to the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Msugh Moses Kembe.
According to the NUC helmsman, the NUC, through its Strategy Advisory Committee on the Repositioning of University Education, has identified Benue State University as the one to pilot the project “in recognition of its national and global reputation in several sectoral areas.”
He said with the nation’s population expected to double by 2050 with the attendant threats and opportunities, it has become imperative for those in the Education sector and other stakeholders to seek solutions to the anticipated challenges.
He listed such challenges which the Blueprint must address as Food security, Education Housing, Transportation, Employment and Health Services, considering that Nigeria is projected to become the 3rd most populous nation in the world by the year 2050.
Professor Rahseed lauded Benue State University for breaking new grounds in several disciplines of learning and expressed hope that the proposed “Blueprint for Restoration of Industrial Productivity in Nigeria 2018-2050” will also form part of its contribution to national development.
Reacting to the selection by the NUC for the Project, Vice- Chancellor of Benue State University, Professor Msugh Moses Kembe, said the choice of the university by the NUC to develop a roadmap for the future of Nigeria was another milestone in the development of the university.
He added that Management and staff of the university would take up the assignment as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility and in appreciation of its recognition as a pacesetter in academic research.
It will be recalled that Benue State University is the only state-owned University which won, through a competitive bidding, one of the 10 Centers of Excellence allocated to Nigeria by the World Bank in 2013.
